LIGHT & DARKNESS
Gospel of John
(F.F. Bruce) “God overruled the disaster of the child’s blindness so that, when the child grew to manhood, he might, by recovering his sight, see the glory of God in the face of Christ.”
9:1 As he went along, he saw a man blind from birth.
This speaks to the natural state of mankind. It isn’t until the second birth occurs that man can see. To say it another way, only when we are placed, by faith, into the Son of Man can we see the things of the Kingdom. Jesus identified the man, not just as blind, but blind from birth. How did He know that, other than the fact that He had Divine Revelation......The revelation wasn't about his own glory. Jesus was about His Father’s business. Jesus Christ pursues His Bride with a passion and fervor that can only be experienced through the Holy Spirit.
9:2 His disciples asked him, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?
Blindness comes just as naturally as sin does for man. Sin blinds us of the ability to see the miraculous promises of God. There are so many interpretations we have of the Law of God. The disciples probably had in mind the Law of Moses that mentions a person’s sin being visited upon their third and fourth generations. In our journey with Christ, he continually opens the eyes of our hearts up to a greater and greater revelation of Himself
9:3 Neither this man nor his parents sinned,” said Jesus, “but this happened so that the work of God might be displayed in his life. (See also John 10:38; 11:40)
The work of Christ at Calvary takes away the sin that so easily encumbers us. His propitiation secures for us, His friends - Eternal Sight. Having the “Light” in your life results in God’s works being displayed in your life. It wasn't the problem alone that caused the man to display the work of God, it is the coming in of Christ to change the blind man’s situation. So, let us focus on Christ, who redeems of all the “injustices” inflicted upon us. Don’t try to concoct ways for God to fix your situation and pray for those imaginations, just entrust yourself to the Good Shepherd who knows all our weaknesses.
9:4 I must work the works of Him who sent me as long as it is day; night is coming when no one can work. (See also Matt. 5:14-15)
Praise God that He would have us participate with Him in spreading the light of the knowledge of God in the face of Christ Jesus. The night might refer to what happened on the cross (Matt. 27:45), this may be a physical picture of a reality that happened in the heavens. We must realize that all the “works” that God has for us have already been accomplished in Christ. We are simply on display before the Universe.....we model the finished work of Christ, via submission to the Holy Spirit’s guidance.
